CCTV Problem?
7 Common Issues
– Fixed.
Black screen, blurry footage, night vision failure, no signal – these 7 problems cover 90% of all CCTV complaints. Try this guide before calling a technician – aksar aap khud fix kar sakte ho.
90% of the support calls we receive trace back to these same 7 problems. And in at least 60% of cases, the fix is something you can do yourself – no technician, no new parts. You just need to look in the right place.
Each problem below includes the exact causes and a numbered step-by-step fix. Start from the top, work your way down – you’ll find your answer.
- Black Screen / No Image – Camera not showing at all
- Blurry / Unclear Footage – Everything looks fuzzy
- Night Vision Not Working – Fine in day, black at night
- Wavy / Noisy Picture – Lines appearing on screen
- No Signal on One Camera – Others working fine
- DVR / NVR Not Recording – Live view works but no playback
- CCTV Not Showing on Mobile – App says offline
The 7 Problems – And Their Fixes
- Camera not receiving power – power supply failed or loose connection at the camera end
- Coaxial or CAT6 connector loose at the DVR port – common after vibration or movement
- Camera physically damaged – especially after heavy rain or a power surge
- DVR channel setting mismatch – analog camera assigned to IP channel or vice versa
- CCA cable connector oxidised – especially after monsoon season in outdoor installations
- Go to the camera physically and check if the power LED is on. No LED means no power reaching the camera.
- At the DVR back panel, unplug the affected cable connector and firmly re-plug it – loose connection is the most common quick fix.
- Plug a known working camera into the same DVR channel. If image appears, the original camera is faulty. If still black, the issue is the cable or DVR port.
- Check DVR channel settings – confirm the camera type (Analog/HD/IP) matches what’s actually connected.
- Test the power adapter with a multimeter – output voltage should be within the specified range.
- Dust, spider web, or moisture on the camera lens – very common in outdoor cameras
- Varifocal camera was not focused properly at installation time
- Camera resolution and DVR output resolution are mismatched
- Lens cover scratched or cracked – after hailstorm or physical impact
- IR reflection from a white wall or shiny surface too close to the camera
- Clean the camera lens with a soft microfiber cloth – gentle circular motion, no pressure. This alone fixes the problem in 40% of blurry footage cases.
- For varifocal cameras, adjust the focus ring behind the lens until the image is sharp on the DVR monitor.
- Check DVR settings – camera resolution and DVR channel resolution should match. Mismatch causes soft, degraded output.
- Angle the camera slightly away from direct white walls or reflective surfaces to eliminate IR washout.
- If the lens cover is physically cracked, only the lens cover needs replacing – not the whole camera.
- Camera not receiving full power – IR LEDs draw significant additional current at night
- IR LEDs have burned out – common in older cameras after 3-4 years
- Day/Night mode set to “Day” manually in DVR/NVR settings instead of “Auto”
- An object in front of the camera is reflecting IR light back into the lens
- Voltage drop on long power cable runs – thin or CCA cable struggles under IR load
- Check camera settings – set Day/Night mode to “Auto.” If left on manual “Day,” IR will never activate regardless of ambient light.
- Cover the light sensor temporarily to simulate darkness and confirm whether IR LEDs actually turn on.
- Check power supply voltage under load – should not drop more than 10% when IR activates.
- If a white wall or reflective surface is directly in front of the camera, the IR bounces back and washes out the image. Adjust the camera angle.
- If IR LEDs are completely dead, camera replacement is the practical fix – repair is rarely cost-effective.
- CCA coaxial cable – sabse common cause, especially 50m+ runs pe
- Coaxial cable power line ke paas se guzar rahi hai – electromagnetic interference
- Ground loop issue – multiple devices different power points se connected hain
- Connector loose ya poorly crimped – especially outdoor junctions pe
- Cable kisi jagah physically damaged hai – bend, pinch, ya animal bite
- Cable route check karo – power cables ke parallel run hai to minimum 30cm gap rakho ya perpendicular cross karo
- Sabhi connectors firmly tight hain ya nahi check karo – BNC connectors finger tight se zyada nahi
- DVR aur camera ek hi power strip se run karo – ground loop often fix ho jaata hai
- Cable visually inspect karo entire route pe – koi sharp bend, pinch point, ya damage visible hai kya
- Agar CCA cable hai aur run 50m+ hai – replace karna hi permanent fix hai, workaround kaam nahi karega
- Usi camera ki power supply fail ho gayi ya fuse gaya
- Cable connector DVR ke peeche se loose ho gaya
- Cable kisi jagah cut ya damaged ho gayi – construction, rodent, ya weather
- Camera ka video output fail ho gaya internally
- DVR port fail – rare but possible after lightning surge
- DVR ke peeche affected camera ka cable unplug karo – ek working camera ka cable usi port pe lagao. Image aaye to DVR port theek hai.
- Affected camera ko kisi working port pe connect karo – image aaye to camera theek hai, cable ya original port issue hai
- Camera ke paas jaao – power LED check karo. Power nahi hai to power supply ya power cable issue hai
- Cable physically trace karo camera se DVR tak – koi visible damage hai kya – cut, crush, ya exposed wire
- Sab theek lag raha hai phir bhi signal nahi – cable tester se continuity test karo
- HDD full ho gayi – overwrite setting off hai to naya footage save nahi hoga
- HDD fail ho gayi – frequent power cuts se hard drive corrupt hoti hai
- DVR mein recording schedule set nahi tha – default “manual” pe tha
- HDD DVR ke saath compatible nahi hai – surveillance grade HDD chahiye
- SATA cable loose hai DVR ke andar – HDD detect nahi ho rahi
- DVR main menu mein Storage – HDD Management open karo. HDD status “Normal” hai ya error show ho raha hai?
- Recording Schedule check karo – “All Day” aur “Continuous” set karo. Manual mode pe recording tabhi hoti hai jab manually start karo.
- Overwrite setting “On” karo – isse purani footage automatically overwrite hoti rahegi jab HDD full ho
- HDD format karo DVR settings se – agar pehle kisi aur DVR mein use hui hai to format zaroori hai
- Agar HDD detect hi nahi ho rahi – DVR band karo, HDD SATA cable tighten karo, restart karo
- DVR ka internet connection gaya – router restart hone se IP address change ho gaya
- App mein DVR ka IP address outdated hai – DHCP se IP change ho jaata hai
- Router pe port forwarding band ho gayi – ISP ya router reset ke baad
- DVR ki date/time galat hai – certificate mismatch se connection fail hoti hai
- Mobile data pe work karta hai lekin WiFi pe nahi – router firewall block kar raha hai
- DVR ko router se LAN cable se connect karo aur DVR settings mein current IP address note karo – app mein yahi update karo
- DVR ko static IP assign karo – yeh best permanent fix hai taaki har router restart pe IP change na ho
- P2P/Cloud connection use karo agar available hai – router settings ki zaroorat nahi padti, seedha cloud se connect hota hai
- DVR ki date aur time check karo – correct timezone aur time set karo
- Router restart karo aur dobara try karo – simple fix jo aksar kaam karta hai
